Mission Statement
Five Thousand Mile Theater is dedicated to telling the stories of a lesser heard voice – the voice of the indigenous, the minority and the marginalized. We will present the works from regions and cultures that are often far from view and celebrate their works by supporting them on their first heroic journey to New York City.
Above all we will explore the tonality, flavor and fabric of the world because great stories transcend all barriers of race, sex, religion and nationality.
We have all arrived in the United States from somewhere, whether it be yesterday, a generation ago or four hundred years ago – these unknown foreign plays, from sometimes obscure places, contribute to the cultural patchwork that is New York City today. By introducing audiences to a brand new cultural experience we hope that these works will help us all understand ourselves just a little better.
As well as exploring the world around us, we are also dedicated to exploring the land we are in and telling the stories of the people who aren’t always heard.
A Brief History
Five Thousand Mile Theater was a born out of Studio B at the wonderful ESPA Studios in NYC. Under the guidance of Keen Company’s Carl Forsman the company has grown from just a little germ of an idea in class to something much bigger.
Many thanks are deserved to many people, but a special thank you to Carl, Tessa LeNevre (ESPA/Primary Stages), Joe Breeden who’s support and web skills have saved me, and all of my wonderful classmates who continue to support this adventure.
